Book Title: Once Upon a Crime
Released: 09/21/23
Genre: Police Procedural
Interview by Heather L. Barksdale
What inspired you to write “Once Upon a Crime”?
Brenham: I love writing crime/detective novels, having been police detective in my former life. This time I wanted a strong yet vulnerable female detective.
How did you come up with the names of your main characters?
Brenham: I used a combination of names of people I’d worked with and from a few I’d arrested.
Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process or your book?
Brenham: I can’t think of any one thing readers need to know about me, my seats-of-the-pants writing style, or my book.
If "Once Upon a Crime" was adapted into a movie, who would you like to see cast to play your lead characters?
Brenham: For Penny Grimes, I’d like to see Jennifer Connoly in that role. For Detective Madison Chase, Amy Adams would be a perfect fit.
When you encounter writer’s block, what do you do to break yourself out of it?
Brenham: When I encounter writer’s block, I set everything aside and watch a couple movies or go for a walk around the neighborhood.
Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?
Brenham: The best tip I can share is for all aspiring authors to read novels in the genre in which they want to write.
What is your favorite genre, book, and/or author?
Brenham: My favorite genre is crime fiction since the experts always say to write what you know.
What are you working on next?
Brenham: My current work in progress is the second in the Detective Kit Hanover series.
