Heather’s Bookshelf: Author Interview with DW Eamer
What inspired you to write “The Satan Gene”?
Eamer: My initial idea for writing a book came from a life-list that I had created around the age of sixteen. I was inspired by a real life Indiana Jones adventurer named John Goddard who had made his own list of about one hundred and twenty or so life goals.
I ended up with something like one hundred and ten goals on my list. Near the top was writing a book. I just didn’t know what it was going to be about at the time.
The actual impetus to get into the writing process for the first book came with my frustration with the weight loss industry. As a career personal trainer, I was having difficulty helping people with weight loss because they were constantly being seduced by a multitude of questionable approaches. I decided to write a book on the subject to counteract the dishonesty in the industry. That book was picked up by the second publisher it was proposed to and went quickly to bestseller status in the French marketplace. From that another fitness industry book was spawned two years later.
My real drive for writing a novel, however, came from my disappointment with quite a few adventure thrillers that I found lacking in a multitude of factors. One day after finishing a particularly bad novel I got the idea that maybe I could do better. After years of in-depth research and writing, The SATAN Gene thriller was spawned!
How did you come up with the names of your main characters?
Eamer: There was no real process. I just picked up names along the way, names that I thought would be good character ones. Nothing was written in stone, either. I think three of my major characters had name changes halfway through the writing of the novel!
Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process or your book?
Eamer: Research, research, research. I wanted my realistic thriller to be as authentic as possible in order to force the reader to question if what they had read could be real. As such, everything I’ve written is verifiable on the internet.
Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?
Eamer: Read multiple authors in the genre in which you wish to write. You learn tremendously about style and delivery. At the same time you might find out if someone else has written the story you had in mind. It could save you from having to scrap a text because it has already been done!
What is your favorite genre, book, and/or author?
Eamer: I absolutely love realistic thrillers that explore conspiracy theories and Catholic Church intrigue. Dan Brown and Steve Berry are the authors that I love reading in those genres.
What are you working on next?
Eamer: The SATAN Gene was never meant to be a one-off novel. I am planning more Gareth Blackwell adventures that will offer readers more religious mysteries, secret codes, conspiracy theories, really nasty villains, and surprising twists!
