Heather’s Bookshelf: Author Interview with Gail Ward Olmsted

Book Title: Class Action

Released:  12/11/25

Genre:  Legal Thriller

Interview by Heather L. Barksdale

What inspired you to write “Class Action”?

Olmsted: Lennon’s character was an integral part of my last book, MIRANDA FIGHTS. I got so much positive feedback from readers saying they wanted to read more about her, so I decided it was time for a spin-off.

How did you come up with the names of your main characters?

Olmsted: Our daughter Hayley came up with the name Lennon Gallagher. I liked the name Nick Russo for her love interest. Heir to a successful restaurant dynasty and a future best-selling author, it just seemed to fit. Sometimes I just use a place-holder name until I’m sure, but I was certain about those two names from the start.

Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process or your book?

Olmsted: Before I start writing, the first thing I do is create a detailed profile of the main characters- physical traits, personal quirks and characteristics, favorite foods, interests, style of clothing… it helps when I get further into the plot and can feel comfortable thinking, ‘yes, that’s so Lennon’ or ‘no, Nick wouldn’t do or say that’. Most of my works have been character-driven and I like to have a very clear idea of who they are before I get started.

If "Class Action" was adapted into a movie, who would you like to see cast to play your lead characters?

Olmsted:  I have always pictured Emma Watson as a perfect actor to play Lennon. She’s warm, smart and seems like a kind person.

When you encounter writer’s block, what do you do to break yourself out of it?

Olmsted: I’ve never really experienced writer’s block, but there are definitely days I devote to editing, marketing activities and research, if I’m not in the mood to work on new chapters. Or I go for a walk, take my kayak out on the water or meet a friend for coffee: all good ways to re-focus!

Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?

Olmsted: Create a team or a tribe of beta readers! These are the folks who will read and review your first or fifth draft and point out holes in the plot, uneven pacing, lack of character development, etc. The best beta readers are generally not family or close friends, although I’m sure there are exceptions. They might be other authors, members of your book club, writing group, or online community. Their input can be extremely valuable, so be sure to build in a few extra weeks in your publishing timeline to receive and utilize their feedback.

What is your favorite genre, book, and/or author?

Olmsted: I read everything from historical fiction to contemporary romance, but lately my favorites are crime dramas and suspenseful thrillers; anything by Michael Connelly, Karin Slaughter, Freida McFadden and Lisa Scottolini.

What are you working on next?

Olmsted: I am finishing the final edits to the sequel, CLASS REUNION, which will be published on 10/1/26. And the 4th title in the Miranda Quinn Legal Twist series is my current work in progress. I’m co-writing MIRANDA HEIGHTS with an action/suspense author friend of mine. After that, maybe a nap?
