Heather’s Bookshelf: Author Interview with Ian Wall

Book Title:  Cathedral of Silver

Released:  3/4/22

Genre:  SciFi Novel

Interview by Heather L. Barksdale

What inspired you to write “Cathedral of Silver”?

Wall: A general desire to write out an idea that had been bangin around in my head since high school. But what really inspired me and became the basis for the story was a Switch Foot song called, "Faust Midas and Myself." If you read the book and then listen to the song, you'll immediately see the similarities. I even directly lifted a couple of lines from the song, mostly to show just how important it has been to my creative process.

How did you come up with the names of your main characters?

Wall: Mostly personal taste, although several names are Biblical, Paul, and Abel are the obvious examples. I also try to theme names based on what planet the characters are from and assign real-world cultures to those planets. So, Paul's people are Greek and Rougar's Hispanic. And I'd be lying if I just didn't love the name Ramona a ton, and took it from the Scott Pilgrim character of the same name.

Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process or your book?

Wall: I think I mostly want people to know that I really appreciate them reading my book, and I have lots more in the works!

If "Cathedral of Silver" was adapted into a movie, who would you like to see cast to play your lead characters?

Wall: All authors think about this, don't they? I always imagined Paul could be played by Russel Crowe and Ramona could be played by a younger Dakota Fanning.

Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?

Wall: Probably just a tip that they've all heard before. But, my advice is really to dedicate yourself and keep writing, write every day!

When you encounter writer’s block, what do you do to break yourself out of it?

Wall: Read a book, drink a little bit of wine to loosen things up, or both. I always read at least one chapter of something before sitting down to write, it really gets the mind working.

What is your favorite genre, book, and/or author?

Wall: Science Fiction is my favorite genre by a long shot, and my favorite author is Drew Karpynshn, (the lead writer of Knight of the Old Republic and the reason I was inspired to start writing int he first place) Despite those two facts, my favorite book is actually Goblet of Fire.

What are you working on next?

Wall: I'm working on book two of the Galaxies Saga! (And it's coming along nicely I think!)
