Heather’s Bookshelf: Author Interview with JJ Hernandez
Book Title: The Broken
Released: 05/18/21
Genre: Crime Thriller
Interview by Heather L. Barksdale
What inspired you to write “The Broken”?
Hernandez: I really wanted to write something in the crime fiction genre but with more diversity in the main characters. I love crime fiction but I’ve found they’re aren’t many books where the main characters are Latino or from the LGBTQIA community.
How did you come up with the names of your main characters?
Hernandez: The main character has my mother’s name. And the other names are just mashups of people I’ve known.
Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process or your book?
Hernandez:
I don’t know if there’s anything especially interesting about my process. I write out a very basic outline, but I find the story as I write the first draft and through the ensuing edits.
If "The Broken” were adapted into a movie, who would you like to see cast to play your lead characters?
Hernandez: It’d be pretty cool to see Michelle Rodriguez as Diana and Pedro Pascal as Julian
When you encounter writer’s block, what do you do to break yourself out of it?
Hernandez: I’ll watch a movie or television show I know is really well written, like The Sopranos or Money Ball. Something with really good dialogue that inspires the creative juices.
Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?
Hernandez: Write all the time. Write anything.
What is your favorite genre, book, and/or author?
Hernandez: My favorite genre is crime fiction and George Pelacanos is the best.
What are you working on next?
Hernandez: I’m writing an action thriller set against the 1977 New York City blackout. It’s a period piece, so I’m spending a lot of time conducting research about the time period.
