Heather’s Bookshelf: Author Interview with John Turiano

Book Title: Flash Back

Released:  01/16/20

Genre:  SciFi/Time Travel

Interview by Heather L. Barksdale

What inspired you to write “Flash Back”?

Turiano: I always had an interest in science fiction and history, especially the World War II era. With that in mind, I decided to weave the two together for my first novel. I did a lot of research for the science (time travel) and the history. My hope is to entertain while also providing some meaningful perspective on history and its impact on our current lives.

How did you come up with the names of your main characters?

Turiano: The names pop into my head and are not always the best choice. I sometimes change it as the character develops. For the main characters, I prefer a name that is easy to remember, but also unique in some way. That said, sometimes a common name like Frank, or Charlie, is perfect for the character.

Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process or your book?

Turiano: I don't have a hard set process. I prefer writing early in the morning and I do a lot of story boarding. I guess you could say I'm more of a plotter vs a pantser.

If "Flash Back" was adapted into a movie, who would you like to see cast to play your lead characters?

Turiano: That's a tough question. I do have a picture in my mind of each character, like a young Harrison Ford for Sam, but they would not be available today. Not in my wheelhouse, but maybe Miles Teller, John Travolta, and Candice Patton for Sam, Frank, and Danielle respectively.

When you encounter writer’s block, what do you do to break yourself out of it?

Turiano: I take a break. Time is the best remedy. Listening to music, reading, watching a move, or taking a hike, are great ways to free my mind and open it to new ideas.

Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?

Turiano: Don't rush. There is so much to learn and it can be overwhelming. Stick with it. It's a marathon, not a race.

What is your favorite genre, book, and/or author?

Turiano: I look more for the story than a specific genre. That said, I guess I prefer science fiction, thriller, horror, drama, historical fiction, and non-fiction.

What are you working on next?

Turiano: I just finished a short camping guide, which was a nice break from writing a full length novel. It was fun to tie in with my favorite summer activities of camping and hiking. Next up, I will pick up where I left off on a paranormal scifi thriller.
