Heather’s Bookshelf: Author Interview with Judy G. Walters

Book Title:  Pulse

Released:  06/02/21

Genre:  Medical Drama

Interview by Heather L. Barksdale

What inspired you to write “Pulse”?

Walters: Pulse, the first book in the Vital Signs Series, came to be because Walter and I wanted to do something together. He's a medical doctor and loves chess, and I'm the CEO of a medical clinic. Writing under the pen name of Judy G. Walters, we were able to create something that was uniquely ours together. We had both authored other books before, but this was our first fictional project.

How did you come up with the names of your main characters?

Walters: When we wrote the character sketches, we thought about what names fit each character's personality attributes and age. For example, Bobby Jackson seemed like a good-looking, age-appropriate name for the main character and John Roberts sounded more safe and reserved for an older physician who would later become the main character of the second book in the series.

Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process or your book?

Walters: The Pulse book was written as a dedication to all the hard-working healthcare workers, many of whom lost their lives during the Covid tour-of-duty.

If "Pulse" was adapted into a movie, who would you like to see cast to play your lead characters?

Walters: The vital Signs Series would be better as a series than a single movie. Each of these actors would play a main character at some point during the series. Martin Henderson from Virgin River as Dr. Jackson, Tom Hanks as Dr. Roberts, and Ermin Bravo as Sergei.

When you encounter writer’s block, what do you do to break yourself out of it?

Walters: I'm only prone to writer's block when my schedule gets so filled up with other things that writing has to take the back-burner. When this happens, I have been known to clear my schedule and check into a hotel for a few days for some undistracted writing time.

Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?

Walters: You don't have to stick to one genre. I have had success in non-fiction self-help, memoir, and now fiction. Write what stirs you at the time.

What is your favorite genre, book, and/or author?

Walters: I'm a fan of Nicholas Sparks and enjoy his writing style.

What are you working on next?

Walters: We just finished Breath, which is with the copy editor, and we are now on to Pressure, the final book in the series.
