Interview by Heather L. Barksdale

What inspired you to write “1871: Rivers on Fire”?

Buchheit: As a former resident of upstate Wisconsin, I've always been bothered by the lack of awareness of Peshtigo and its tragic night of fire. This, along with my continuing interest in fact-based historical fiction, inspired me to start writing.

When you encounter writer’s block, what do you do to break yourself out of it?

Buchheit: I force myself to write a fixed period of time every morning, despite my mood. I find that anything written down, no matter how quickly or clumsily, is of value later on when I do a second pass.

Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process, or your book?

Buchheit: I'd like readers to know that much of the book is factual. The very end contains a listing of brief real-life biographies.

What is your favorite book, genre, and/or author?

Buchheit: Historical fiction. Kenneth Roberts novels.

What are you working on next?

Buchheit: Haven't decided. Writing is such hard work!
