Heather’s Bookshelf: Author Interview with Zoe Bacurin
What inspired you to write “Mobs & Desserts”?
Bacurin: I’m normally inspired by a single idea. In this instance, I thought it’d be interesting to explore the idea of a faith healer who no longer wanted to heal. Obviously, the faith angle wasn’t something that survived long into the story, but that initial idea is what I used to build everything that Mobs & Desserts eventually became.
How did you come up with the names of your main characters?
Bacurin: In the early stages of writing my rough draft, I cycle through numerous names for the characters. As their personalities become more apparent, it becomes clear which name will stick.
Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process or your book?
Bacurin: Much of the internal conflict in Mobs & Desserts (particularly concerning anxiety and depression) came from my own experience with bipolar disorder and PTSD.
Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?
Bacurin: There is no wrong way to write a book. When you’re telling a story, you need to follow your own voice. If that means deviating from advice you heard in a MasterClass or an interview with your favorite author, so be it. Find your own method of storytelling.
What is your favorite genre, book, and/or author?
Bacurin: I’m not sure I could pin my preferred taste down to a single genre, but my favorite book is We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson.
What are you working on next?
Bacurin: I’m currently working on a ghost story.
