Interview by Heather L. Barksdale

What inspired you to write “The Book of Gates”?

Verreault: I've always loved fantasy stories (both novels and films) and wanted to create my own universe, my own series.

Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process, or your book?

Verreault: I wrote the Galenor series in French. The Book of Gates is the first volume and is part of a four-book series. It is the only one to be translated at the moment. The second volume was published in March 2020 in French. I am currently working on the third and hope to have it released by the end of 2021. In each book, we follow a different magician, and there is a love story in each.

How did you come up with the names of your main characters?

Verreault: I chose JudyAnn's first name because I liked the sound. I can't remember how I found it exactly, but I keep a notebook in which I write loads of ideas over time. (Ideas of events, names of places, people, etc.)

Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?

Verreault: Never give up. Persevere. And above all, keep writing.

When you encounter writer’s block, what do you do to break yourself out of it?

Verreault: When I'm stuck writing, I listen to music. It can also happen that I stop for a while, sometimes a long time, to read other novels ... Sometimes it gives me ideas ..

If "The Book of Gates" were adapted into a movie, who would you like to see cast to play your lead characters?

Verreault: I don't have actor ideas for every character, but I've had some for some.

It took me a long time to write my first book, though, and now some of the actor choices I was thinking of initially weren't going to fit. I remember at first I would have seen Jackson Rathbone as Vincent, the vampire magician. I would also have seen Jack Black as Kyle, one of the wizards who is also one of the main characters. Finally, having really liked James Marsters as Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I imagined him as Calchas Crowley, the leader of Godwynn's squad. (Godwynn being the capital of Galenor).

What is your favorite book, genre, and/or author?

Verreault: My favorite genre is fantasy. I also really like romance-fantasy.

What are you working on next?

Verreault: I want to finish my Galenor series first. After that, I would like to write more series, maybe one even more focused on romance.
