Heather’s Bookshelf: Author Interview with Dan Lawton

Book Title:  The Both of Us

Released:  05/01/25

Genre:  Psychological Thriller

Interview by Heather L. Barksdale

What inspired you to write “The Both of Us”?

Lawton: The inspiration came from two places. First, I was consuming a lot of psychological thrillers and domestic suspense and loving them, so I wanted to write my own. Second, the specific idea came from periodically listening to the Dr. Laura radio show. I thought, what if somebody called in I knew? From there, the idea sprang.

How did you come up with the names of your main characters?

Lawton: I've written so many books (11 and counting) that I do have a hard time coming up with character names. I try to make them easy to remember (and honestly, easy to type!) and one I haven't used before. Sometimes I will ask my wife or my daughter to give me the first name that comes to mind and that often helps.

When you encounter writer’s block, what do you do to break yourself out of it?

Lawton: Writer's block is definitely real. For me, as long as I know one scene ahead then I'm good to keep working. Taking it one scene at a time helps me.

Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?

Lawton:  The writing tip I like to give is simply just write. The more you do it the better you will get. So go for it.

What is your favorite book, genre, and/or author?

Lawton: I primarily read thrillers, and also literary fiction, if the mood strikes. My favorite author has always been John hart. I also devour Harlan Coben.

What are you working on next?

Lawton: Since "The Both of Us," I have written two other novels. My next project is going back with fresh eyes and revising the next novel, then preparing to start the publication process over again with my publisher. I will probably start another story this summer too.
