Heather’s Bookshelf: Author Interview with David M. Beers

Book Title:  Immunity for Murder: The Veronica Taft Story

Released:  12/01/21

Genre:  True Crime Story

Interview by Heather L. Barksdale

What inspired you to write “Immunity for Murder”?

Beers: I personally worked on the defense of Veronica Taft. Later, assisting her attorney at the defense table during her trial. My inspiration was the tragic wrongful conviction of a factually innocent woman, who was convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the brutal murder of her two-year-old son. With her surviving children ripped away and placed in foster care.

How did you come up with the names of your main characters?

Beers: This is a book of non-fiction – in other words a true story. The names of all the main characters are real. However, I did change the names of some of the lesser involved characters to protect their privacy.

Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process or your book?

Beers: I never dreamed I would become a published author. However, I was first inspired by another story which became my first published work – ‘Reign of Injustice.’ Another compelling story which needed to be told. I’ve always enjoyed writing but I was clueless and didn’t even know how to get started. I had a lot to learn along the way. As a result, it took three years. But I was able to write my next book in less than a year. I guess I did learn something.

If "Immunity for Murder" was adapted into a movie, who would you like to see cast to play your lead characters?

Beers: A movie? Never gave that too much thought. But now that you mention it, I think it would make a great movie. As for the lead characters. No one well known. A good opportunity for some up and coming young actors.

When you encounter writer’s block, what do you do to break yourself out of it?

Beers: With non-fiction I haven’t experienced much in the way of writer’s block. Because it’s all based on well researched factual events. Unlike fiction where you need to be more creative. However, there are times after reviewing a lengthy paragraph, or even an entire chapter I’ve written, when I just tear it up and start over.

Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?

Beers: If you have an inspiring story that you feel compelled to write – go for it. Even if it’s your first time. And don’t let the minor setbacks stop you.

What is your favorite genre, book, and/or author?

Beers: I’m a big fan of non-fiction – true crime. And occasionally, a fiction novel. I’ve come to learn that the saying is true: ‘Truth is stranger than fiction.’ No real favorite books or authors but I will read some by John Grisham, James Patterson & Ann Rule.

What are you working on next?

Beers: For my next book, I’m still undecided but l have several more true stories to choose from. Hopefully, I’ll start writing again this fall.
