Interview by Heather L. Barksdale

What inspired you to write “The Leslie Kim Serials”?

Stopps: I had written a short story about a character named Leslie that was a bounty hunter, with a bit of a “boy named Sue” complex. In the story, he is hunting this monster and is supposed to kill it, but in the end feels too bad for the creature and lets it go. I liked the idea enough that I decided to expand it!

Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process, or your book?

Stopps: I like to think of The Leslie Kim Serials like a TV show that could go on for years. Like Supernatural or Bones. It’s sort of monster of the week. I just finished book 4 (not counting the prequel) and hope to write 5 and 6 this year as well. So, if you like to have a series that you know you will be able to keep coming back to then you might like this one!

If "The Leslie Kim Serials" were adapted into a movie, who would you like to see cast to play your lead characters?

Stopps: After I started writing Leslie, I really just kept picturing him as Steven Yeun. I don’t know if it was because I liked his character in The Walking Dead or what, but he would be the lead for sure. I would also cast Jenna Coleman as Elena.

What is your favorite book, genre, and/or author?

Stopps: I read in so many genres, I don’t think I could choose! Right now, I’m really enjoying books by Charlie N Holmberg and Lindsay Buroker.

When you encounter writer’s block, what do you do to break yourself out of it?

Stopps: If I get stuck, it’s usually because I’m not sure where I’m writing to. So, either I need to think over the plot again or change it up. If I’ve done enough pre-writing, I don’t think I’ve ever been stuck.

Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?

Stopps: Set a goal for when you will finish each stage of the book and stick to it. Even self-created deadlines work and help to make sure your book won’t sit untouched for a few years.

What are you working on next?

Stopps: I’m in the process of rewriting a young adult fantasy that I wrote back in 2015 (see above for a good reason to have deadlines!) and soon I’ll start editing book 4 in The Leslie Kim Serials.
