Heather’s Bookshelf: Author Interview with JP Strecker

Book Title:  Shimmers

Released:  10/18/20

Genre:  Paranormal SciFi

Interview by Heather L. Barksdale

What inspired you to write “Shimmers”?

Strecker: My son asked me to write a horror story that he could use as a movie. He is a junior at Penn State majoring in film and communications. I have always enjoyed the topic of supernatural events, but from a scientific perspective. This project allowed me to let my imagination flourish while considering the crossover of science and the paranormal. If you enjoy ghosts, Bigfoot, and UFOs, you will enjoy this tale.

Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process or your book?

Strecker: I wrote the book in a little under 6-weeks, and then many weeks of editing. Editing is an extensive process. I encourage anyone who wants to write to just get your ideas down on paper, find a good editor, and then begin to polish. I find too many people get frustrated with the process and just quit, but if you spend some time writing, some editing, some contemplating, you will enjoy the process from start to finish. Writing is a labor of love and regardless of the outcome (book sales), you will be proud to say you have published a book.

Also, given my health history, stage-4 cancer and a cardiac arrest (Yes, they had to use the paddles), I have thought a lot about life and death. I have also committed my life to learning in the fields of neuroscience, business, and education. Difficult events can provide you a conduit of creativity. Use your imagination to come up with small stories to create your larger story.

If "Shimmers” were adapted into a movie, who would you like to see cast to play your lead characters?

Strecker: To be honest, all the characters are derived from childhood friends. I have difficulty imagining someone else in those roles; however, a group of unknowns, such as Stranger Things, would be a great start.

When you encounter writer’s block, what do you do to break yourself out of it?

Strecker: I tend to focus on the multi-faceted roll of writing. Just remember, if your mind is not in the imaginative state, just start to edit. If your focus is lacking for editing, consider brainstorming a small story or scene designed for later in the book. Writing does not have to be a linear process.

Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?

Strecker: Be patient when publishing your works. Sometimes it will take two or three great works to be recognized and develop an audience. Listen to feedback. Amazon is a great place to receive it, but the best is seeking out advice from those that will be truthful.

What is your favorite book, genre, and/or author?

Strecker: Up until recently I would have said Stephen King, however, recently I really enjoy the writing style of Ernest Cline with Ready Player One.

What are you working on next?

Strecker: I’m working on the sequel to Shimmers as it ends on a cliffhanger. The group needs to return to Ohio before the overlapping dimensions destroy the world. The journey will be action packed.
