Interview by Heather L. Barksdale

What inspired you to write “I Dream in Color”?

Mazza: I wish I had a light, fun answer to this question, but I Dream in Color is a story of darkness and so the inspiration behind it is of the same vein. It was written as the world fell into the chaos of the pandemic, when we were all first isolated in lockdown with no cure or vaccine in sight and it very suddenly felt like we were dumped into a dystopian novel.

This story was inspired as a need to process my own confrontation with the baser side of humanity, to grope with grief and to attempt to understand the struggles of people I could no longer help or reach. While the storyline and many of the themes are fictional, the emotional turmoil in this book is real, because it was mine.

Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process, or your book?

Mazza: I am a Biochemist, with a career specialising in pharmaceutical research and development. Most recently I worked for a company that developed biopharmaceuticals. There drugs were proteins naturally occurring in the human body (and their lack caused disease), and were produced by genetically modified cells that were grown in great fermenters, harvested and purified into life saving medication. I take all of my scientific experience and interests and put it into my novels.

If "I Dream in Color" was adapted into a movie, who would you like to see cast to play your lead characters?

Mazza: For the main character, downtrodden, struggling Alex, it would be Timothee Chalamet.

For Jeff, the scientist and the man responsible for the bio-pod program that Alex finds himself in, Ted Danson.

Rhea, a cool and calm nurse, was inspired by Lashana Lynch.

Tom, a friend to Alex when he had no one else and a man who struggled just as much, would be played by Tom Felton.

Jacq, the Military Police officer who is all tension and growling aggression, would be well represented by Ewan McGregor. I have seen many images of him looking mean, sitting on a motorbike and wearing black leather.

What are you working on next?

Mazza: The sequel to I Dream in Color, called Dreams Written in Madness. It picks up before the ending of book 1, from the perspective of Jeff Myers. It starts by showing how their world burned.
