Interview by Heather L. Barksdale

What inspired you to write “The Villains of Everest University”?

Hyde: The Villains of Everest University was inspired by my search for beauty. I find beauty in the changing of the seasons, the strength of the human heart, and the ability of the mind to learn and create. So, my characters are on their quest for higher education while also diving deep into their criminal trades and the book encapsulates the changing of the seasons within one academic year. Also, my main character, Logan, begins a journey of faith that sees him through to the end of the book.

How did you come up with the names of your main characters?

Hyde:  I’ve always loved the name Logan and I wanted to give that name to my son. However, my husband was not too thrilled about the name Logan and so even though my physical child does not have that name, my fictional child does!

Is there anything that you want readers to know about you, your writing process or your book?

Hyde: I want readers to know that my book is a testament to the fact that you can create anything that inspiration requires. I had always seen myself as a painter and never a fiction writer, but when inspiration knocks on the door, I find that answering the call never disappoints. So, if my book communicates anything, it is that you should run your own race and live life according to your own individual calling.

If "The Villains of Everest University” were adapted into a movie, who would you like to see cast to play your lead characters?

Hyde: If Villains was a movie, I would LOVE to cast my friends as the characters. When I wrote this book, I didn’t have any actors in mind, but I could see my friends playing the parts of Aubrey Maria and Jade Hutchinson. I’ve actually never told them this though LOL. If a director ever calls me and asks to make a movie out of Villains, I will then let them in on that secret.

When you encounter writer’s block, what do you do to break yourself out of it?

Hyde: I use other hobbies and fun activities in life to break out of writer’s block. I know now that life is about balance and writing all the time is not balance for me. I need rest, food, relaxation, time to paint, multiple excursions to hobby lobby, and walks with my dog to feel mentally balanced enough to write. I write small chunks at a time and I do not judge my progress very frequently. Writing a novel is a long process and it helps to stay balanced so that I have the power to sustain myself over the long haul.

Are there any tips that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?

Hyde: Don’t be afraid to share your full inspiration. When you are inspired to write a scene that may not be politically correct or you want to add a character that may not be well received, do not be ashamed of that. If there is anything to be ashamed of, it would be robbing your inspiration of its original integrity. Stay true to your original inspiration. It came to you for a purpose. Don’t be afraid of it.

What is your favorite book, genre, and/or author?

Hyde: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien is my absolute favorite novel.

What are you working on next?

Hyde: I’m currently in the process of editing The Villains of Everest University II. I’m so thrilled to be working on the sequel and I can’t wait to share it!
