“The feeling that this revelation caused in me was indescribably scary and amazing and devastating and exciting, all the same time.”

“Displaced” follows the adventures of Bea Cooper, a sixteen-year-old who finds herself transported through time and into a world completely different than her own. She happens upon two men - Durango and Mordael - who she must quickly learn to trust if she will safely make it out of their world and back to hers.

Bea is a typical teenage girl - angsty and emotional at times. She has suffered loss and struggles to communicate with her step-mother about even the smallest things. Bea’s life is turned upside down when her Grandfather dies, leaving her a mysterious item that transports her through time. With the help of her new found friends (and her skills as “The Amazing Flinger Woman”) Bea must solve the mystery of how she ended up in their world and how to get home.

Bea’s character is multifaceted - she is endearing and caring while also being self centered and naive. The layers of this character are well done and believable as are the ancillary characters of Durango, Omaha, and Maia. Durango is determined and driven, Omaha is funny and adventurous, and Maia is extraordinarily strong and intelligent. The differences in this new world are interesting and the allusions to the “artifacts” are a lot of fun too (everything from McDonald’s to a Ringo Starr impersonator).

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I thought the character development of the protagonist was well-done and the novel well-paced. The budding relationships were believable and added to the dimension of the book. The mysteries were a little obvious, but I think necessary in setting the stage for future books. I would have liked more development of the villain (no spoilers here) in that I felt like the presence and background of that character could have been more interesting and possibly more intertwined with the protagonist or the past. Finally, I am not a fan of cliffhangers. While this one leaves you wanting to read on (which I suppose is the point), I felt that there were too many unanswered questions for me to be completely satisfied with the ending.

I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.
