Author:  WK Valentine

Released:  12/07/20

Genre:  Dystopian SciFi (A non-stop dystopian cyberpunk space opera thrill ride)

“Utter darkness, thick, complete. More than nothing, or was it less than something? There was never anything. Only unending nothing. There was nothing now. Only errant wisps of occasional perception. Not solid. Inky like the darkness.”

“Future Furious” introduces the crew of the Whiskey Thief, a spaceship and a story set at some point in the future. Hen, the leader of the bounty hunters, attempts to wrangle her crazy group of associates to do a job that will get her ship to fly. She’s so close to realizing her mission, but nothing ever seems to go as planned.

This story is full of interesting characters. Hen herself is layered: a strong exterior hiding a heartbreaking past. There’s NV a feisty young woman with anger management issues after an unimaginable childhood, Swift, the reformed but broken ex-drug addict, and Eugene, the resident old guy filled with regret. (And don’t forget about the two giant Ganymede shepherd canines: Bacchus and Dionysus).

When the group unwillingly gets involved in an extremely dangerous situation, they have to run for their lives, coming across all kinds of would-be assassins and ghosts from the past in the process.

Trigger Warning: Adult language (lots of it), child death, drug use, sexual situations, insinuated rape

Overall, I found this to be a wild and entertaining ride. While I found the writing to be geared toward a younger age group, as it is expletive-ridden (although creatively so), it was also easy to understand and fun to read. Early on in the story, I found the changing points of view to be a bit confusing, but after getting into it, I liked the character development that evolved because of it. Each of the main characters had a clear voice with individual desires, vices, and backgrounds. By far my favorite part of the story were the flashbacks. They were emotional and often times heart wrenching. I liked the reveal of what caused the crew of the Whiskey Thief to run and how that evolved into a different kind of fight. The ending was also satisfying as it tied everything up nicely and then let the epilogue open up the possibility to future books.

I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.
