Heather’s Bookshelf: The House of Wynne Lift
Author: Cheryl Pena
Released: 07/14/21
Genre: Suspense/Thriller Novella
“The house was actually a subterranean mansion worthy of the most extravagant movie star. There were crystal chandeliers in the main rooms along with rich carpeting everywhere but those larger rooms. There were aeroponics bays with herbs and vegetables, a gym and a jogging track, a heated pool, a generator room—they still hadn’t figured out what type of fuel was used—the list went on."
“The House of Wynne Lift” introduces Professor Foster Livingston and reporter Peter Wylie as they seek to unravel a the mystery of what happened to Wynne Lift.
The duo travel a long ways and through challenging terrain to arrive at the home of Wynne Lift. Their arrival is unannounced and a surprise to the homeowner. Wynne is anxious to commit to a formal interview, but he does allow the pair to stay over in order to recover from their journey.
Livingston and Wylie are very different from each other and at-odds about everything from habits to table manners. But when things around them start to seem a little off, they must band together if they are going to make it out of there alive…
Trigger Warning: violence, death
Overall, I enjoyed this novella. It is fast-paced and moves along swiftly, even for a novella. The tone of the novel is also intriguing and leads you into wanting more. The two main characters of Livingston and Wylie provide an interesting balance as they do not exactly get along, but must work together in the end. Lift is also just odd enough in the beginning of the story to keep you guessing. But as the story evolves, there’s a lack of connection to the main characters and thus a lack of urgency about what happens to them. The ending seemed a little abrupt and maybe a little premature, but still satisfying and complete.
I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.
OVERALL REVIEW:
A fast-paced novella filled with intrigue but lacking a little in connection to the main characters
