Heather’s Bookshelf: Serial Fiction Sideshow Book 1: In a Galaxy Far, Far Awry

Author: Liam Gibbs

Released:  07/18/15

Genre:  SciFi/Parody Novella

“Legion and Lowensland had been inseparable friends before things had changed. Legion was one of the only two friends Lowensland could claim. Everyone else ridiculed him for his absurdity, his stupidity, his fashion sense. Legion, however, treated him like a brother. They had served together in Intergalactic Protection until Lowensland joined the underside of the law almost six years ago.”

“In a Galaxy Far, Far Awry” introduces Master Asinine- a villain determined to organize the galaxy’s greatest bad guys into a gang known as…The Bad Guys. He has a death ray and he’s not afraid to use it. The galaxy’s only hope? His arch enemy and ex-best friend Major Legion.

The story follows each of the main characters as one seeks to destroy the galaxy and the other tries to save it. The main characters are very different and the tale provides background on why Master Asinine and Major Legion became arch enemies in the first place.

Trigger Warning: murder, death

Overall, I was a little torn about this book. I really liked the concept of the story- almost a combination of a comic and a scifi novella. And who doesn’t like the dichotomy of a really good superhero vs a really bad villain? The story is quirky and won’t be for everyone. It’s written in a conversational manner which is fun and entertaining but often difficult to read. The names of the characters are also creative, but again difficult to read through the story and there are so many characters! There is some background provided on the two main characters, but very little on any of the ancillary. Some of the jokes were funny and hit, but I found many of them to be more aligned with dad jokes (which again, some people will love- just not my favorite). This was a hard review to write as I feel some people will find this book really entertaining and funny and others will find it’s just not for them. Unfortunately, I fell into the later category.

I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.

OVERALL REVIEW:

A quirky comedy about a hero and his nemesis. While full of jokes, unfortunately most did not hit for me and contributed to a difficult read.
