“Juana bites her lip to keep from snapping back. She can’t let JT know how badly that word is starting to hurt. In a different world, under different circumstances, maybe he would’ve been right, and every could-have-been is like a slap across the face, reminding Juana why they’re stuck here.”

“Nothing” introduces Juana Perez, a young woman with extraordinary gifts. She’s just trying to live her life when an unfortunate encounter on a train reveals her hidden powers. Juana’s anonymity and safety are threatened as the events go viral and unwanted attention ensues.

Juana seeks the help of her “siblings” to both hide and figure out her next steps. They come up with a plan to protect themselves and Juana while also honing their individual powers. I enjoyed learning of each of their skills and how they could use them. It reminded me of the cartoon Captain Planet in the greatest way. (I’m sure this ages me, but couldn’t resist). I do wish that Juana’s powers could have been displayed a little bit more, but Ajay’s were very creative and interesting.

Trigger Warning: Adult language, violence

Overall, I enjoyed this novella. It’s a very quick read, filled with action, and it moves along quite nicely. The author does a nice job in giving each of the main characters their own voice and gives insight into the relationships between them. I especially liked insight into the inner turmoil of the “siblings” desire to have a more normal life. The premise is interesting, although not exactly unique, and the story feels like a novella prequel to me. The ending especially felt like a preview of more to come. I hope that the author further develops the characters and evolves their powers in future stories.

I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.

OVERALL REVIEW:

An action packed novella that is not exactly a unique concept, but an entertaining ride just the same
