Heather’s Bookshelf: Secrets of the Sealed Forest

Genre:  YA Fantasy/Action/Adventure

“They returned to the path—-Joseph hoped it was the right one. In the ominous forest, it was hard to tell. At times, it was comforting to see other life forms seeking a home in this world, but they were scarce, and their existence was hardly enough to settle Joseph’s mind. The beautiful landscape appeared to travel forever into the distance, forming an eternal spiral for them to navigate. Were they simply walking in circles? It was a persistent question in Joseph’s mind, at least until things around them started to change.”

“Secrets of the Sealed Forest” introduces Joseph Erift and Eric- two high school buddies and gamers who receive a mysterious invitation for an all-expense paid trip to an island for a sneak preview of a popular video game. While thoughts that this may be too good to be true float through their minds, they can’t pass up on the opportunity and sneak off for an adventure.

When they arrive at the island, they soon find that the trip is not as advertised. Professor Ben is mysterious and does not disclose the true purpose of the trip immediately, nor does he tell the boys who drew them there to begin with. The guys are about to leave when Professor Ben draws them in with promises of…magic.

Eric and Joseph must decide if they are going to trust the Professor to lead them on an adventure that won’t get them killed or if they are going to run away from what could be the opportunity of a lifetime. Their decision will forever change them and everyone they encounter along the way.

Trigger Warning: violence, adult language

Overall, I enjoyed this story. The three main characters of Eric, Joseph, and Professor Ben each had their own personalities, strengths, weaknesses, and quirks. The interactions and communication especially between the two eleven-graders felt authentic and was amusing to read. I found the parent factor a little breezed over and wish some kind of excuse or something would have covered that up a bit more. I also thought the pacing was a little off. The beginning moved along, and the ending was faced-paced but felt rushed compared to the middle of the story. The pacing may make more sense as part of a series, but as a standalone was challenging. The fantasy aspects were fun but not especially inventive. There were many references and story lines I think gamers will especially enjoy. The ending was satisfying and felt finished while also opening up for future novels. It maintained the element of humor and wonder that was great throughout the rest of the story.

I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.

OVERALL REVIEW:

Strong main characters and entertaining ties to gaming are a little overshadowed by inconsistent pacing in this YA fantasy meets action-adventure
