Heather’s Bookshelf: A Week’s Worth
“A Week’s Worth” introduces Mac. He lives in LA and works for FEMA. But when his mom falls on hard times medically and emotionally, he finds himself facing a new kind of challenge.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story. Mac is a flawed protagonist. He clearly loves his mother, but some of the things he says to her and the way he says it… you want to shake him. But then there are other times when he shows caring and respect for what she’s done for him and you want to give him a hug. The relationship between Mac and his mom really is special and a memorable undercurrent throughout this tale. The pacing is steady, but there’s something about the way the story is told that makes you want to keep reading (or listening in my case). There are some pretty funny and outlandish scenes in the book including an accidental trip into a tent of a homeless woman and another pretty memorable one involving a door and a disgusting neighbor. My only issue was a portion near the end of the story with some medical recommendations and diagnoses that were not exactly totally accurate, but it was not exactly key to the story or plot. The ending wrapped everything up nicely. I would absolutely be interested in reading another book in the MacGuffin series.
I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.
I checked out this story on audiobook platform. The author reads his own tale, which normally does not go well (in my experience). However, this time it did! The author’s voice is just the right combination of smooth and expressive to keep your attention.
OVERALL REVIEW:
The love between a son and his mother highlight this fun and entertaining journey wrapped in a murder mystery.
