“Jay and Gia laughed together for the first time in a long time, and, for a moment, all felt right. The ice had been broken, and it was like they hit the resume button on their friendship.”
“Besties in Crime” follows childhood best friends Jay and Gia, each experiencing their own recent personal devastation. The two friends have drifted apart and haven’t spoken in more than the occasional holiday text in over a year.
But when Gia’s marriage falls apart, there’s only one place she thinks to go…Jay’s front door. Her husband, Frank, seems disinterested, has refused marriage counseling and has suggested a separation. Jay’s been let go from a job he felt stuck in and feels that he’s falling behind his coupled friends as his most recent relationship has also ended.
Determined to refresh their friendship and inject some fun into their lives with a trip to Atlantic City, Gia attempts to dip into her joint banking account. Finding that she’s locked out, she decides to instead collect from Frank’s stash in his home office.
An unfortunate series of events leads to the friends finding themselves in an unexpected and dangerous situation where they must run for their lives while also trying to clear their names.
Will Jay and Gia get out of this alive or will the rekindling of their friendship be their downfall?
Trigger Warning: violence, arson, murder, assault, gun-related violence, adult language, homophobic language
Overall, I really enjoyed this story. It is fast-paced, quirky, on the verge of preposterous and highly entertaining. Told mostly through the POVs of Jay and Gia, the narrative is quick-witted, filled with banter and pop-culture references. The story begins with each of the characters in personal crisis and devolves into absolute chaos and a life-threatening drama. Throughout the danger, Jay and Gia maintain their personalities and the relationship between them. It feels authentic even when set in the middle of all of the turmoil. I typically prefer development of ancillary characters. However, in this case I found the protagonist-focused story made sense and actually enhanced the relationship between Jay and Gia. The ending of the story wrapped everything up nicely. It felt complete and continued the banter without feeling forced about the character’s development. What a fun ride!
I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.
