“The only thing that awaited them was an infinite sea of blackness. A pitch so deep and vast that it suffocated you in sheer loneliness. She had experienced the pure and utter destruction of herself.”
“Requiem of the Unclaimed” follows the Read siblings as they struggle to survive. In an attempt to support his sister and mother, Walter sets out to Nassau to find money to send back to London.
When the money stops arriving, Sybil suspects the worst. And when their mother suddenly passes away Sybil finds herself on the street and on her own. With a little help from a concerned neighbor, Sybil disguises herself as a boy in order to get on a ship in search of her brother.
Sybil befriends a fellow sailor, Simon, on the journey, leading them both to find the ship known to last have Walter aboard. The ship’s captain, Wynn, has his own twisted motivations, as does Walter’s old friend, Hugh. When Capt. Wynn and his crew figure out who Sybil really is, she’s banished to face the same fate as her family.
Will Sybil figure out what happened to her brother? Will other family secrets be revealed? Or will she succumb to a cursed island and those who wish her harm?
Trigger Warning: violence, death of a parent, alcohol abuse, murder, violence, attempted sexual assault, sexist insults and gore, suicidal ideation

Overall, I enjoyed this story. This dual POV is told through brother and sister, Walter and Sybil. The two alternating POVs assist in pushing the story forward in a fast-paced way while also adding insight into character motivations and backgrounds. Sybil is a relatable and emotional protagonist. Her growth throughout the tale is evident and felt like a natural progression. Walter’s love for his sister shines and results in some heroic sibling actions. The story has major themes surrounding individual growth amidst the connection and responsibilities to family. Walter and Sybil’s love and connection were clear and undeniable. Unfortunately, I did not feel there was such connection to any of the other ancillary characters. The pacing of the tale was also a bit uneven with the beginning/introduction of Sybil and the ending both seeming to be rushed. There was quite a bit of time spent on fight scenes that could have been better used for character development. I loved Sybil as a character and would enjoy reading about her continued evolution in future stories, if the author decides to do so.
I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.
OVERALL REVIEW:
An adult pirate-centric thriller with a strong protagonist and complex family dynamics. Challenging pacing and a lack of connection to ancillary characters hinder the overall tale.
