“I don’t know how long we sat there in silence after that, occasionally sipping from the bottle, and when we started talking again it was about nothing. Certainly, it wasn’t about the attack, or the dead man or the face that had appeared on my arm.”
“The Great Dick and the Dysfunctional Demon” follows Steve Witowski in 1982. He’s on the run and about to stumble into the most insane series of events, but will he make it out alive?
After hitching a ride and shacking up with Maria, his well-meaning driver, Steve happens upon a woman under attack. Steve jumps in to stop the assault and saves Victoria, the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Victoria is so enticing that she convinces Steve to return to her newly purchased church/brothel-turned home and become her employee.
Steve’s infatuation grows as Victoria’s behaviors and requests become more and more bizarre. Obsessed with the possibility of being with a woman like Victoria blinds him to stranger and stranger occurrences. When desecrating a tomb in the basement of the home you’re sleeping in doesn’t faze you anymore…something has probably gone wrong along the way. But Steve isn’t fazed….until the insanity reaches someone else much more innocent…
Trigger Warning: violence, murder, sexual situations, attempted sexual assault, adult language, reference to alcohol and drug use, reference to suicide
Overall, I enjoyed this bat-s***, crazy ride of a smartly-written book. I know, I know. I should have guessed it from the premise and the title…but I didn’t and now we’re here. The story follows Steve, who is a self-proclaimed a**hole and THE REASON women generally want to knock men upside their heads for the decisions…or lack thereof. How many times can someone be smacked in the face by red flags to just ignore it? The story starts out strong with the mystery of how Steve meets Victoria. It then draws on a bit, becoming a bit convoluted, before eventually coming back together into an interesting and well-rounded ending. There’s witch-craft, curses, and myths-come-to-life all intertwined with unexpected shenanigans. There were several events that made me re-read a passage in order to just confirm the crazy. The whole story reminded me of the movie “Fight Club” where the audience is constantly guessing what’s real and what’s in the protagonist’s head with insanity pursuing and some random slow parts in the middle that really didn’t seem to add much to the overall story arc. The Great Dick didn’t have a shirtless Brad Pitt, but it did have a well-rounded and complete ending that pulled the story together.
I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.
OVERALL REVIEW:
A supernatural thriller filled with dark-humor, unexpected twists and turns, and a truly frustrating main protagonist.
