“Smiling briefly, Lucia shook her head. ‘Actually, there are only two places to hide anything: where no one will look, or where no one will see.”

“Where No One Will See” introduces Lucia Scafetti, a young woman living in Philadelphia and starting out as a private investigator. She’s got a promising new business, a loved (though challenging) pet dog Rocco, and the new cute lawyer down the hall is interested in her. But when her father, who happens to be a notorious hitman, suddenly gets out of jail, her life changes.

First, he shows up at her place unannounced and demanding a chest his mother left. Then he announces an important item missing from that chest. While on the search, he disappears. When her family presumes he’s dead, Lucia thinks there may be more to his disappearance.

When people around her start getting killed and her father’s blamed for their deaths, that’s one thing, but when someone shoots at her and then kidnaps her dog…Well, that’s another story. Lucia joins the investigation, soon realizing others investigating (including the cops) might not have her best interests in mind.

Trigger Warning: violence, assault, murder, adult language

Overall, I enjoyed this story. Lucia is a likable and relatable antagonist. Her family has a complex and dark history and growing up in their shadow has been a challenge for her. Just as she’s starting out on her own, their choices throw her back into their circle and their pasts continually drag her down. I loved her use of snark and sarcasm and felt it provided an element of levity much needed in this story. Her love for Rocco and the relationship with Hank also showed insight into another side of her, which was just as important as the harder side. Lucia’s mother is another ancillary character that really makes an impression and sets the tone for the importance of family in this tale. The pacing was well done with a good amount of personal details/events intertwined with pushing the mystery forward. I did not see the twist coming, but looking back probably could have figured it out through the story clues, which I love. The ending wrapped up everything nicely and also set the stage for what could be a series if the author desires. The very, very end had a second twist that I didn’t think was super necessary and felt a little off from the rest of the tale, but also didn’t see it coming. I would love to follow more of Lucia’s adventures in the future.

As a side note, I really enjoyed reading all the quotes at the beginning at the chapters. Nice touch!

I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.

OVERALL REVIEW:

A strong and snarky protagonist with a dark family background provides an interesting background for a mystery tale with a twist.
