Heather’s Bookshelf: Alpha Female Files

Author: Jessica Burner Lee

Released:  07/12/22

Genre:  Crime novella

“In Chinese superstition, this is what we call a Very Bad Omen. From there, things only got worse.”

“Alpha Female Files” is a story told by the author’s experiences and words and through her point of view. Jessica is a business-woman turned housewife who happens upon a long overdue attempt at blackmailing her and her husband.

The blackmail opens the door to Jessica’s investigation and layer upon layer of terrible truths. After establishing the authenticity of the content of the blackmail, Jessica must find out who the blackmailer is and how everything in her life seems to be connected.

Jessica’s been through some real challenges in her life- including cancer- but nothing compared to this. She’s pissed off and determined to find the whole truth, exposing those who wronged her and the blackmailers all at once.

Trigger Warning: domestic violence, sexual situations, adult language

Overall, I enjoyed this story. I will start by saying this story is told through the author’s POV throughout her investigation. The details and story are therefore told through her eyes, perspective, and with little corroborating evidence to call it a “true crime”. The story also includes references to many people and connections that do not utilize real names, making it hard to verify facts (though understandable in the way it is done). Therefore, I chose to review this as more of a fictional tale with true crime elements. From an entertainment standpoint, this book does not disappoint. It is on the shorter side, and it flies by in the way it is told. I liked how the author interspersed what was going on in the world with what was going on with her life/investigation. The way she wrote was clearly dictated by her feelings and felt raw and unedited in parts, which I also enjoyed. However, it could sometimes read as repetitive or back tracking on itself. The revealed truths are almost unbelievable including connections to almost every aspect of her life and even Jeffrey Epstein. While the story takes more of a vengeful tone, it was not lost on me the horror Jessica must have gone through learning everything she did. I hope she delves into this aspect of the tale further in future books.

I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.

OVERALL REVIEW:

A woman seeks the impossible truth after happening upon a blackmail scheme against her family. Fast-paced and raw, though a little repetitive at times.
