“It unnerved him that she seemed to understand his darkness but more so that he found her so familiar, drawing him closer to her. Having experienced her own pain, her own longing for some semblance of a family, she understood him. He only worried that as he got deeper and deeper into his story, she might not be able to see him the same way.”

“Blood & Bone” introduces Jack O’Donnell, an aging rock star, as he recalls his past in order to come terms with his present. Jack reflects on his life: the choices, mistakes, successes, and his path of finding and losing love.

Jack’s story is told from both the present timeline and through stories that he shares about his past with a reporter named Erin. Jack tells the story about how and why he became a musician, how his band Mogo was formed, and what happened to his relationships along the way. The story also reveals Jack’s professional successes and personal failures.

Jack’s bandmates also highlight the the past storyline. Cash and Wade are his two oldest and closest friends turned bandmates. They have their own challenges along the way and their relationships with Jack are put to the test. But the most compelling relationship is between Mia (the final bandmate) and Jack. Their friendship turned romance is endearing and tragic.

Trigger Warning: Adult language, drug use, sexual situations, violence including domestic and sexual

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. The parts of the tale told from the past point of view are so intriguing that I found myself not wanting to put the story down. The things that Jack went through as a young man were heartbreaking and the challenges that he encountered as an adult were magnified through these previous traumas. The thing that really drew me in to this story was the relationship between Jack and Mia. The tale was like Romeo & Juliet meets Kurt Cobain & Courtney Love. Their tale was just so romantic and tragic at the same time… I couldn’t help but keep turning the page.

I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.

OVERALL REVIEW:

A wonderful and terrible romantic tragedy mixed with rock & roll.
