“Truth. When you search for the truth, you try every means to unearth the lies, you look into every shadowy corner for answers. But the path you follow, depends on what you believe the truth really is.”

“If Shadows Could Tell” introduces Aurora Stellar, a young woman living in a small town in Montana, who finds herself in the middle of a bad day that does nothing but get worse. She accidentally crashes a funeral and then finds herself close to a woman who goes missing.

The young journalist’s body is later found and suspected of a drug overdose, but Aurora has other thoughts and begins her own investigation. She receives help from her bestie, Suz, and her hacker friend Gary. A mysterious man, Nicolas, also seeks answers and an interesting dynamic develops between the two.

During her investigation, several storylines and backgrounds emerge to reveal secrets of many of those within Aurora’s little town. It seems as though everyone has something haunting them or hidden away.

Trigger Warning: murder, drug use, assault

Overall, I enjoyed this mystery. The structure of the story was well done and kept the tale moving forward. I thought the flashback/alternative voice portions added suspense and intrigue. The first third of the story was a little slower than the rest, but provided a lot of introductions and characterization for the rest of the book. While I felt that I had a good handle on Aurora’s character by the end of the story, I thought the attention paid to Nicolas and his background was actually much more thorough and relatable. As Aurora was the lead character, I wish this would have been delved into a little more for her. The other ancillary characters could have also benefited from further development which would have enhanced the connection to the characters. The mystery itself was intriguing and the twist, while a little obvious, was intriguing. I enjoyed the end of the story and felt the epilogue tied everything together nicely.

I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.

OVERALL REVIEW:

An intriguing mystery and suspenseful story with a likeable though underdeveloped protagonist
