Heather’s Bookshelf: Revenge
“Revenge” introduces Jake Bryant, an ex-detective who returns to Michigan after his best friend is found murdered. Unimpressed by the detective assigned to the case and determined to find who killed Tom, Jake begins his own investigation.
Overall, I found this to be a fast-paced and straight-forward read. The start of the book starts out with a bang and drew me in to keep going. The lead character of Jake is broken and well-developed but not exactly likeable. I understood his motives clearly, but wanted something more relatable or endearing to connect to. The same could be said for the best friends of Bobby and Rick. I felt the best developed characters were Tom’s widow, Mary (though not very present in the story), and Caleb. He was a pretty one note bad guy (basically bad in every area of his life) but a clear one with a developed back story of his family. His relationship with his brother was also well done. I found the end of the story to be a little rushed and forced in areas. However, the ending does wrap up most of the storylines while also leaving it open for the future books in the series.
I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.
OVERALL REVIEW:
A pretty straight forward story about an ex-cop seeking revenge for the death of his friend
