Jack “Mac” MacGuffin, a retired Navy officer, volunteers for disaster-response duty after a hurricane wreaks havoc in Puerto Rico. Having to deal with demolished homes, disaster-related damage and death may be expected, but what he faces is much more than that.
When his life is threatened and secrets are revealed, Mac must make a decision. Will he look the other way, do his job and go home or will he take justice into his own hands and fight the powerful individuals responsible for more suffering than should be possible?

Overall, I was a bit mixed on this review. The story mostly follows Mac and his POV as he uncovers the truths of what is occurring in Puerto Rico and who is behind it. Mac’s an interesting protagonist. He is jaded, but ultimately wants to seek the truth and stand for what’s right. There’s plenty of intrigue and action throughout the story and several ancillary characters that play their role before exiting for the next. There are certain scenes that really work from a suspense standpoint and then there are others that would probably work better as a movie. The scene in the airport just seemed to drag along while the scene on the beach was compelling (except the part with the dog- I hated that part and trigger warning for any animal lovers out there!) My main difficulty with the book was the structure. It was written in a manner that often included repeating short and choppy sentences, sometimes covering multiple pages. This made it a very challenging read for me to get into, though I acknowledge is more preferential. The ending, while complete, also felt abrupt for me- leaving me wanting a bit more for Mac after everything he had gone through within these pages.

A thriller/suspense with a complex protagonist, intrigue and action, but structure and an ending that left me wanting more.
