Heather’s Bookshelf: Legacy: A Scion Book Series

Author: Jay Reace

Released:  08/15/20

Genre:  Fantasy Adventure Novella

“She falls silent, feeling the children’s stares on her. She had no choice but to tell them something. “Years ago, your parents made a series of choices, which are affecting your family now. I know I’m not being very specific about the situation, but I’m sure your parents would rather it come from them and not me.”

“Legacy” introduces Xolani, Raine, and their two children (Keon and Niya). Having moved to the country and away from their troubles, their peace is disturbed when a terrible dream rips into their serene existence.

A short time later, Xolani and Raine are summoned to speak with the king and to face their pasts. Xolani is assigned a mission which seems simple on the surface, but turns into a dangerous journey. With the help of their friends and their kids, Xolani and Raine try to fulfill their task while keeping themselves and their family safe.

All of this takes place in the future, after a near-apocalypse and world rebuild focused on the replenishing of nature. Many now live in world where both technology and nature work together.

Trigger Warning: death, murder, and violence

Overall, I enjoyed this novella. It is fast-paced and does a good job in filling the few pages with character details that enhance the story. Xolani, Raine, and their friend Rashid each have distinctive characteristics which make them stand out and intriguing. However, there is little development for the kids and the villains. I did like the background descriptions (just enough to allude to what happened without giving details) and the ties to family and the past. The setting for the story is interesting and the powers (or gifts) just different enough to make them full of possibility. Moving into future stories, this would be a great way for enhanced world building and character development. I found the ending of the story to be a little abrupt and open-ended and thought this novella could have easily been transposed into a novel, allowing for more characterization and closure.

I received a copy of this story in exchange of a fair and honest review.

OVERALL REVIEW:

An action-packed novella with some intriguing characters, powers, and relationships- felt a little unfinished by the end.
